7 Ways To Make Money Online By Learning To Write

You want to make money online. I get it.

Again, you're not alone because I too always tried to figure out ways I could make money online.

One thing you need to know first is that to make money online without scamming people is by acquiring high-income skills.

High-income skills are such as:

  • Coding
  • Writing
  • Marketing
  • Content creation
  • Branding
  • Audience building

Once you have acquired the skills, then you need to figure out what you want to do with your skills.

In your case, I know your goal is to make money online. The best thing you can do after acquiring the high-income skills is to create a portfolio.

A portfolio is a collection of work samples that you can bring to an interview, send to a prospective employer, or send to a potential client.

Having a portfolio is very important because it can provide evidence of work that you’ve done, and illustrate your skills and abilities.

With high-income skills and a portfolio, the next step is to find someone to pay you to solve their problem with your skills.

The best place to find someone to pay you for your services is through freelancing platforms such as Upwork and Fiverr.

You should know that you can’t only rely on freelancing platforms to get clients. The best thing you can do is to do client outreach.

You can reach out to potential clients through Twitter DMs, LinkedIn, Email, or even Facebook groups.

When reaching out to potential clients, make sure that you detail their problems and how your services can help them to solve the problems.

Note, if you have an online presence or you are part of a community in your niche, clients can find you without applying.

That is how I landed my first paid writing gig.

In this article, I will give you seven ways to make money online using writing skills. These seven ways are:

  1. Technical Writing
  2. Sponsored Content Writing
  3. Social Media Content Writing
  4. Writing Ebooks
  5. Ghostwriting
  6. Blogging
  7. Web Content Writing

1. Making Money Online Through Technical Writing

Technical Writers are in high demand, and you can be making $100 to $1000 per article if you have good writing skills.

If you are wondering, Technical Writing is the process of preparing instruction manuals, how-to guides, tutorials, and other supporting documents to communicate complex and technical information in an easy-to-understand manner.

There are specific skills you need to become a good Technical Writer. These skills are:

  • Technical Skills
  • Writing Skills
  • Googling Skills
  • Learning Skills

Technical Skills

Technical skills can include coding, design, web development, or app development.

Writing Skills

Good writing skills allow you to break down complex concepts in an easy-to-understand manner to your reader.

Googling Skills

Writing an excellent technical article requires intense research, and knowing how to google will come in handy.

Learning Skills

When it comes to Technical Writing, you will be required to write about topics you are not familiar with. Therefore, being willing to learn becomes very important because it will help you figure things out.

Once you have acquired the skills mentioned above, the next step is to start writing technical articles.

Writing technical articles is not hard as most people might think. All you have to do is build projects using your coding skills and write how you built the projects.

For example, one year ago, I was trying to add a blog to my website and I didn’t want to spend money on a content management system or build one from scratch.

I decided to display Dev To articles on my website blog using Dev To API and Django.

I searched for tutorials that could help me do that but I didn’t find any. That’s when I decided to figure out how to do it.

Once I figured out how to do it, I wrote an article about the process and published it on Dev To.

Dev To is a blogging platform for developers where you can write articles and publish them there for other developers to read.

Other blogging platforms include Hashnode, Hackernoon, Medium, and DZone.

The good thing about publishing articles on these blogging platforms is that they will serve as your portfolio.

I almost landed a full-time technical writing job paying $2K to $6K per month by just blogging on these blogging platforms.

If clients don’t reach out to you, check out this website that has a curated list of active publishers, publications, and agencies that pay for high-quality technical content.

2. Making Money Online Through Writing Sponsored Content

Sponsored content is premium content that a sponsor pays a publisher to create and distribute.

In simple terms, sponsored content is when two brands form a sponsored content partnership – the advertiser pays for the content, and another brand, social media influencer, or publisher shares it.

For example, I was paid $200 to write an article and publish it on a blogging platform.

I got this opportunity because I had a following on this blogging platform and my articles were getting views.

3. Making Money Online Through Writing Social Media Content

If you have a huge following on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, companies might approach you where they ask you to post content that promotes their products for a fee.

This form of marketing is popularly known as influencer marketing. It involves endorsements and product placement from influencers who have an expert level of knowledge or social influence in their field.

I have a good following on Twitter of almost 18K followers and it has helped me to land opportunities as shown below.

4. Making Money Online Through Writing Ebooks

An eBook is an electronic version of a traditional print book that can be read by using a personal computer or by using an eBook reader.

To write an ebook, you need to be an expert at something with lots to share or be a great storyteller.

Once you have written an ebook, you can publish it on market places such as Gumroad and start promoting it.

Let us say that the ebook is priced at $10. If you make 10 sales, that is $100 you have made online while sleeping.

I have already launched a free technical writing ebook and a paid mentorship program on Gumroad.

Here is how I am doing so far.

5. Making Money Online Through Ghostwriting

A ghostwriter is someone that writes copy like articles, speeches, books, blog posts, email newsletters, web copy, etc., and isn’t credited for that work.

The credit goes to your client or someone in that company or business that hired you.

I once wrote an article for a client working at Microsoft and I was paid $300 for the article as a ghostwriter.

6. Making Money Online Through Blogging

The definition of blogging is the process of writing a blog, an online journal in which you share your thoughts about a particular subject with readers.

One of the easiest and most common ways to make money blogging, for beginners, is affiliate marketing.

You don’t need to have your own products or services. You simply promote other people’s products on your blog, and when someone makes a purchase, you make a commission off it.

This week I made $7.49 online through affiliate marketing. If 100 people buy through my affiliate link, it means I can make $700 without doing anything.

Another way of making money online through blogging is by selling your digital products, physical products, or online courses.

7. Making Money Online Through Web Content Writing

A Website content writer or web content writer is a person who specializes in providing relevant content for websites.

Website content is any and all content contained on a website. This can be video, audio, or written content. On most websites, the text makes up the majority of the content.

Written web content is an integral part of a robust content marketing strategy, yet it can take a significant amount of time to produce.

Website content is one of the first things busy websites and business owners outsource.

Because of the demand, website content writing can be a really lucrative side hustle.
